The housing boom of the early part of this decade is evident with annual housing permits hovering between 13,000 and 16,000 since 1999. 2006 saw the beginings of a decline in permits as the housing bubble began to burst. 2009 ended with roughly a quarter of the permit activity as we saw just 5 years earlier.

With the exception of 1985 and 1986, most permits have been for single family housing. That trends still continues although the gap between the two has closed as the housing market collapse and ensuing recession have slowed permit activity of all types.
